Project Overview: The central urban area of Changzhi’s wastewater treatment expansion and upgrade project is a vital aspect of the “Twelfth Five-Year Plan for Urban Wastewater Treatment in Shanxi Province.” This project contributes to urban development, ecological city construction, and creating a livable environment.
Project Scale: This project entailed an additional daily wastewater processing capacity of 100,000 tons and the renovation of the original wastewater treatment capacity of 100,000 tons per day, resulting in a total capacity of 200,000 tons per day. The treatment adhered to national standard Level IA.
Location: The expansion took place west of the existing primary urban wastewater treatment plant, requiring approximately 150 acres of land.
Process: The project adopted the stepwise denitrification process (AA/O+AO).
Investment: A total investment of CNY 480 million with approximately CNY 397 million allocated for the plant construction and CNY 83 million for auxiliary pipeline network construction.
Project Significance and Progress:
The daily wastewater treatment capacity of 100,000 tons for Changzhi’s primary urban wastewater treatment expansion is part of the national “Twelfth Five-Year Plan” for key city infrastructure development and a major wastewater treatment facility project in Shanxi Province.
Progress was evident in 2014 with the main civil engineering completion by May’s end, full-scale hydraulic testing by June’s end, facility installation completed by July’s end, and facility water commissioning by August’s end.
The project received support from national and provincial policies and initiated a “Hundred Days Drive” in May to expedite the schedule, increasing investments in human resources, materials, equipment, and capital, which in turn allowed for accelerated project construction.

The upgrade of the primary urban wastewater treatment facility in Changzhi, with a daily processing capacity of 100,000 tons, addresses the issue of increasing wastewater discharge versus insufficient treatment capacity.
The project is instrumental in achieving a daily processing capacity of 200,000 tons, adhering to national standard Level IA.
