Beiqi (Zhenjiang) Automotive Co., Ltd. was established with investment from Beijing Automotive Group Co., Ltd., one of China’s top five automotive companies. It was formally signed in Nanjing on August 7, 2013, and groundbreaking took place on September 9, 2013. Established in 1958, Beijing Automotive Group Co., Ltd. has evolved into a large state-owned automotive enterprise group covering vehicle research and development, manufacturing, general aviation industry, automotive component manufacturing, automotive service trade, investment, and financing businesses. In 2013, Beiqi Group sold 2.164 million vehicles with an operating income of 266.38 billion RMB. Beiqi (Zhenjiang) Automotive Co., Ltd. is located in Dantu District, Zhenjiang City. The completion of the Zhenjiang industrial base fills the gap in Beiqi Group’s layout in the Yangtze River Delta and even in East China, making it the fifth major base after North China, South China, Southwest China, and Central China. Beiqi (Zhenjiang) Automotive Co., Ltd. plans a total investment of 15 billion RMB. The construction of the base is implemented in two phases. The first phase mainly produces SUVs, MPVs, and other models with an annual capacity of 150,000 vehicles, targeting the high-end consumer market in East China and nationwide. The second phase produces mid-to-high-end passenger car models and automotive engines and other core components. The total planned production capacity for both phases exceeds 300,000 vehicles. In 2015, Beiqi’s Zhenjiang base was fully completed, and the first vehicle rolled off the production line on December 30th. The number of employees will reach 1,600. On the second day of the official launch of Changhe Automobile Jiujiang Industrial Park with a planned total investment of 13 billion RMB and Changhe Automobile Jingdezhen Hongyuan Base with a planned total investment of 14 billion RMB, Beiqi Group once again announced a new layout with practical actions. On December 28th, along with a brand-new SUV model BJ20 rolling off the production line, Beiqi Group’s Zhenjiang factory was successfully completed and put into production, marking another important move in Beiqi Group’s layout of the national market before the 13th Five-Year Plan. Beiqi Group will improve its national layout and expand the strategic map of independent brands.
The BJ20, launched by Beiqi, is a new generation A+ class SUV model and also the first model produced at the Zhenjiang factory. It inherits the off-road culture of Beiqi 212, creating a tough urban style with a rugged and atmospheric look. It is expected to achieve SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) in the mid-2016. In the current product planning, Beiqi’s Zhenjiang base covers A0 class, A+ class, and B class models mainly consisting of SUVs and MPVs. The first phase of the new base mainly produces independent brand SUVs, MPVs, and light commercial vehicle models, with an annual capacity of 150,000 vehicles. The products are mainly aimed at high-end consumers in East China and the national market. After reaching full production capacity, the annual sales revenue is expected to reach 26 billion RMB. The second phase plans to produce sedans, new energy vehicles, automotive engines, and other core components. After completion, the annual sales revenue can reach 50 billion RMB.
With a total construction area of 190,000 square meters, Beiqi’s Zhenjiang factory aims to build a green and environmentally friendly ecological vehicle factory. It is designed and planned according to four major processes, including stamping, welding, painting, and assembly, incorporating the entire vehicle factory. Among them, the stamping workshop adopts two flexible production lines, which can quickly switch various types of parts and molds to achieve the production of various vehicle models. The welding workshop has a total of seven fully automatic production lines, using 156 welding and handling robots, with an automation rate of up to 80%.
Officials from Beiqi Group stated that Zhenjiang, located in the economically vibrant Yangtze River Delta region, has superior geographical location, developed transportation, and a strong manufacturing industry foundation, with obvious supporting advantages around the automobile industry. The construction of the Zhenjiang vehicle factory by Beiqi Group is an important measure for Beiqi Group’s industrial layout and driving regional economic development. In the future, the Zhenjiang factory will shift its focus from manufacturing to a balance of manufacturing and services, actively explore the automotive aftermarket service, radiate the Yangtze River Delta and even the national market, and become another important support for Beiqi Group’s innovation and transformation.
