The Guangzhou Pumped Storage Hydroelectric Plant, affiliated with the Southern Power Grid Peak Regulation and Frequency Modulation Power Generation Company, is located in Conghua, Guangzhou, known for its “hot springs and lychees,” approximately 120 kilometers from the city. The total installed capacity of the Guangzhou Pumped Storage Hydroelectric Plant is 2400MW, making it the first high-head, large-capacity pumped storage project designed and constructed independently in China. It is also currently the world’s largest pumped storage power station.
The Guangzhou Pumped Storage Hydroelectric Plant hub project consists of upper and lower reservoirs, water intake systems, underground power plant caverns, and outgoing yards. The natural drop in elevation between the upper and lower reservoirs is over 500 meters. The entire project is constructed in two phases, installing 8 reversible pumped storage units with a capacity of 300MW each, designed for a head of 535 meters and an overall efficiency of 76%. Construction commenced on May 25, 1989, with the first unit generating power on June 29, 1993, and comprehensive completion achieved in June 2000. During the construction process, the Guangzhou Pumped Storage Hydroelectric Plant pioneered the implementation of the “owner responsibility system,” “tendering system,” and “construction supervision system” in China. To summarize and promote the experiences and achievements gained during the construction, the Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of Electricity held experience exchange meetings at the Guangzhou Pumped Storage Hydroelectric Plant in January 1991 and June 1995.
